EU POLICY ON SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT

The European Commission's strategy for promoting the uptake of green public procurement (GPP) was outlined in its Communication on Public procurement for a better environment (COM(2008) 400). This included the target of achieving 50% GPP across the EU by 2010.

The Commission manages a number of key activities to facilitate GPP implementation in the EU, including:

  • GPP criteria on a number of key product/service sectors
  • Buying Green Handbook - a guide on implementing GPP within the EU Procurement Directives
  • A GPP website, containing a information, advice and links
  • The GPP News Alert - a monthly newsletter, containing good practice examples and latest news

RELATED POLICIES AND LEGISLATION

GPP is also referenced as a powerful tool in achieving key policy aims in a range of European policy documents. A number of Directives and Regulations also include obligations related to GPP.
