Upscaling Hydrogen Gensets in European Cities

Back-to-back with the 9th General Assembly of the FCH JU Regions & Cities Initiative
15 January 2019

ICLEI Europe, in cooperation with the EVERYWH2ERE project, is organising a city-oriented workshop on “Upscaling Hydrogen Genets in European Cities”. The event will highlight modern Fuel Cell and Hydrogen (FCH) technologies as clean alternatives to fossil fuel generators in providing energy for construction sites, festivals, harbours and other temporary urban events.

With European cities driving the decarbonisation of transport, urban heating and cooling, industries and services forward, the workshop will focus on how FCH technologies as a clean alternative to diesel-based generator equipment can support cities in reaching their climate and energy targets, reduce emissions and noise and increase air quality.

This workshop will offer:

  • an understanding of how hydrogen generator sets (gensets) can be a viable alternative to diesel generators
  • a platform to exchange on the necessary regulatory frameworks for deploying hydrogen gensets in city areas
the opportunity to speak about and promote your own innovative decarbonisation measures
  • The workshop will also serve as an entry point for becoming part of the EVERYWH2ERE Regions & Cities Interest Group to explore options for hosting hydrogen generator sets and to profit from tools and long-term recommendations generated throughout the project.

Awarding, Selection and Exclusion Criteria in Public Procurement

Awarding Criteria in Green Public Procurement • Evaluation Matrix • Socially Responsible Public Procurement
17 - 18 January 2019
Berlin

Advanced hands-on experience, operative know-how and thorough knowledge of procedures and risks are necessary to ensure clear, effective and reliable procurement procedures. Efficient procurement procedures require more flexibility, transparency and fulfilment of high qualitative, environmental, social and innovation standards. Yet, many contracting authorities still favour lowest price criteria as the safest and fastest procedure. As many examples prove that the lowest price does not always mean lowest costs, this model gradually disappears and is being replaced by extended requirements and criteria.

Ecolabel, what is that? And how to develop a new ecolabel

5 February 2019, 12:00 - 13:00

The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) is a non-profit association of third-party, environmental performance recognition, certification and labelling organisations founded in 1994 to improve, promote, and develop the ecolabelling of products and services. Only environmentally friendly products and services proven to have lower environmental impact may carry a GEN member ecolabel. GEN member ecolabels are among the world's strongest environmental labels for products and services. "Ecolabelling" is a voluntary method of environmental performance certification and labelling that is practised around the world. An ecolabel identifies products or services proven environmentally preferable overall, within a specific product or service category. GEN members operate some of the world's strongest ecolabels.

Ecolabels are known as an effective marketing tool to communicate environmental friendliness of products to consumers and are a key tool to support implementation of green (public) procurement in many developed and developing countries worldwide. Many governments and industry groups recognize that eco-labelling could provide sought-after economic incentives for better long-term stewardship and availability of natural resources important for national economic welfare.

To further drive progress in this area, the Global Ecolabelling Network, GIZ Thailand and UN Environment are starting a project to support emerging ecolabelling initiatives around the world. The aim of the project is to facilitate learning between existing and emerging ecolabelling schemes, and build capacity to develop new ones. You can find more information about the project here: http://www.oneplanetnetwork.org/initiative/working-group-2-type-i-ecolabels .
