EU-Taiwan GPP seminar held in Taipei

The 2017 EU-Taiwan Green Public Procurement Seminar, involving 150 participants from Europe and Taiwan, has taken place in Taipei. Organised as part of the European Business and Regulatory Cooperation (EBRC) programme, experts from the European Commission, EU member states and Taiwan presented and discussed policies, strategies and best practice for sustainable and circular procurement.

International cooperation on resource efficiency in global supply chains is a trade priority for the EU, while Taiwan is developing a green public procurement approach to large-scale infrastructure projects. Participants in the seminar included regulators, representatives of central and local governments, as well as the private sector, and the programme focused on best practice and strategies for implementation of sustainable procurement.

ICLEI's Deputy Regional Director, Mark Hidson, presented illustrative examples of successful approaches taken by several European cities to the implementation of Sustainable Public Procurement. Topics of other presentations included the circular economy and procurement, national approaches to sustainable procurement and the application of GPP to major projects, such as railway construction. Panel discussions explored GPP approaches to stimulating innovation and investment in Taiwan and Europe.
