Green maintenance of municipal fountains, Barcelona
When renewing the contract for municipal fountain cleaning and maintenance in the City of Barcelona, strict environmental specifications were included. 25% of points in the award phase also related to environmental performance. Environmental improvements included water and energy savings, and chemical use reduction.
In 2006 the Eastern Shires Purchasing Organisation (ESPO) signed a series of framework contracts with suppliers of environmentally-friendly cleaning products. As a central purchasing body, these framework contracts are usable by any UK authority.
In 2009 the London Borough of Lewisham launched an assessment of the carbon footprint of its supply chain. Results showed the carbon footprint of the supply chain was 2.5 greater than the direct operations of the Borough.
